🚆 Northern Explorer
Auckland to Wellington — one of the world's great rail journeys through the volcanic heart of the North Island
The Northern Explorer is a legendary scenic train journey — 681km along the historic North Island Main Trunk line, from Auckland's Strand Station through Hamilton, across the volcanic plateau past Tongariro National Park, over dramatic viaducts, and down through Palmerston North to Wellington. The journey takes approximately 12 hours and runs three times per week in each direction. It is operated by KiwiRail's Great Journeys division.
Carriages feature panoramic side and roof windows, a café carriage, an open-air viewing car, onboard commentary in five languages via headphones, and air conditioning. A premium Scenic Plus carriage is available with an enhanced dining experience, complimentary drinks and dedicated hosts. Luggage is stowed in a baggage car. Departs from The Strand Station — a short walk or taxi ride from the city centre (note: not Waitematā/Britomart).
ℹ️ Getting to The Strand: The Strand Station is approximately 15 minutes' walk from the eastern entrance at Britomart Place (Waitematā Station). Alternatively, connect from AT Southern Line services at Papakura Station — southbound services stop at Papakura to pick up passengers.
💡 Book early for the best fares — popular dates sell out. Check for departure days before planning; the Northern Explorer does not run daily. Does not operate over Christmas/New Year (late December through mid-January). Book at greatjourneysnz.com.
🚆 Te Huia — Auckland to Hamilton
A daily commuter and regional train connecting Auckland and the Waikato — 7 days a week
Te Huia is a daily rail service connecting Auckland and Hamilton, operated by KiwiRail under contract to Waikato Regional Council. Named after the now-extinct huia bird, the service launched in 2021 and has grown steadily — now running 7 days a week with multiple daily services. It's a genuine commuter train, designed for people travelling between Auckland and Hamilton for work, study or leisure.
Onboard: comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, power and USB ports at every seat, an onboard café, toilets, and space for bikes, luggage and prams. The journey takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. Fares are paid with a Bee Card (similar to AT HOP — buy onboard or at Hamilton Transport Centre) for best fares, or with cash/EFTPOS onboard. AT HOP is not accepted. Children under 5 travel free.
Note: Te Huia is in its final period of trial funding — the service is funded until 30 June 2027. Check tehuiatrain.co.nz for the current status and timetable.
ℹ️ Terminates at The Strand, Auckland. Connect with AT train and bus services at Puhinui Station (AirportLink bus to Auckland Airport) and Pukekohe Station (Southern Line trains to Auckland city centre). The Strand is approximately 15 minutes' walk from Waitematā Station via Britomart Place.
InterCity Buses
InterCity is New Zealand's largest intercity bus network, connecting Auckland to towns and cities across the North Island — and through ferry connections, to the South Island. Services operate daily with multiple departures on most routes. All coaches have free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, reclining seats and onboard toilets. A premium Gold class with leather recliner seats is available on selected services.
📍 Main Auckland Terminal — 102 Hobson Street, City Centre
All InterCity services depart from and arrive at 102 Hobson Street, Auckland Central — the SkyCity bus terminal. This is adjacent to the Sky Tower and a short walk from Te Waihorotiu Station (City Rail Link, opening 2026) — use the Victoria Street / Federal Street exit and head up the escalators or lift to reach Hobson Street. The terminal has toilets and waiting areas. Book online at intercity.co.nz — no credit card required.
Many services also stop at suburban Auckland locations — see the Auckland stops section below.
