Fruitvale Road is a quiet local station on the Western Line, serving the residential suburb of Kelston and the western areas of New Lynn. The station has been proposed for renaming to Kelston — which better reflects the suburb it serves. Kelston Mall is a 5-minute walk, offering everyday shopping and a popular Monday night market. Two significant schools — Kelston Girls' College and Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education — are adjacent to the station, and there are a handful of good cafes and restaurants in the local area.
