Ōtāhuhu is one of Auckland's most culturally rich and vibrant town centres — a densely packed high street with some of the best and most affordable multicultural dining in the city, drawing food lovers from across Auckland. The town centre is about 10 minutes on foot from the station — or a 2-minute bus ride with buses running every 5 to 10 minutes, with Vietnamese, Malaysian, Thai, Indo-Fijian and Pacific Island cuisine all within easy reach. Ōtāhuhu Station is also a major South Auckland bus interchange, connecting train passengers to Māngere, Ōtara, Highbrook, Hunters Corner and beyond.
Cheap Eats & Restaurants
Ōtāhuhu's town centre is one of Auckland's best destinations for affordable, authentic multicultural food — Vietnamese, Malaysian, Thai, Indo-Fijian and Pacific cuisine, most within a 5–10 minute walk of the station.
A Ōtāhuhu institution with nearly 1,700 reviews — "best pho I've ever had, meat was tender and delicious." The lemongrass chicken on rice is devoured by kids and adults alike, and the spring rolls are a must. Fast service even when busy, friendly welcoming staff and generous portions at great prices. Open daily from 10am. One of Auckland's most popular Vietnamese restaurants.
Daily 10am–9pm
A Ōtāhuhu favourite for over 20 years — "through all this time they have remained true to the food." The deluxe pho (everything you want in a pho, fragrant umami goodness) and the spring rolls (light and crispy) are the signature dishes. Chicken wings, fried rice and Kung Pao are reliable classics. Vietnamese iced coffee now on the menu. Massive menu, fast and friendly service. Closed Mondays.
Tue–Sun 11am–9pm · Closed Mon
One of Auckland's oldest Vietnamese restaurants — "I've been coming here for about 30 years." Unpretentious and efficient, with spring rolls that are "SO meaty," succulent meats in the soups, and generous portions with plenty of condiments. Great fried chicken. The atmosphere is pure cafeteria — fluorescent lighting and plastic chairs — but the food more than compensates. Closed Tuesdays.
Mon, Wed–Sun 11am–9:30pm · Closed Tue
Rolling Chopstick
A brilliant hidden gem on Great South Road — "discovered by chance and went back a second time during our trip." The chef remembers your order weeks later and makes everyone feel genuinely welcome. Outstanding banh mi (the chicken banh mi with Vietnamese coffee is "10/10"), fresh bao buns, pho and summer rolls. "This is a nugget of a place." Mon–Sat, closes 5pm.

Lima Bintang Malaysia Cuisine
Just steps from the station — authentic Malaysian flavours, beautifully presented and generous portions. The seafood laksa is "tasty, smooth, jam-packed with seafood and crispy bean curd." The Singapore noodles are "insanely full of assorted meat and seafood." Better than PappaRich and MamaRich according to regulars. Knowledgeable, helpful staff. Closed Mondays.
Tue–Sun 11am–3pm & 5–9pm · Closed Mon
A remarkable dining experience down a hidden garden path from Station Road — tuk tuks, Buddha statues, soft lighting and fairy lights create an atmosphere that genuinely feels like Thailand. "Hands down the best curries in Auckland — the yellow curry is my favourite curry ever." Curry puffs and pad Thai are both standouts. Dinner only Tue–Sun. Closed Mondays.
Tue–Sun 5–10pm · Closed Mon
A large multicultural food court on Mason Avenue — "one of the oldest food courts in Ōtāhuhu." Multiple stalls including Chandus (Fiji-style and Chinese dishes, a standout), Thai, Japanese (Oishi Japan Food — the chicken katsu is excellent), Indian (butter chicken and naan at the entry), plus a dedicated drinks stall with fresh juices, smoothies and coffee. Halal options available. Great value with generous portions. Open daily from 10:30am.
Daily 10:30am–9pm
H & M Café & Takeaway
"THE HIDDEN GEM OF AUCKLAND" — a tiny four-table takeaway on Great South Road that delivers incredible flavour. Lamb flaps, palusami ("rich and creamy"), chicken with a magic marinade, taro and fat old-school spring rolls, all at prices that seem impossible in 2025. "$1 for 2 potatoes." Beloved by locals, discovered by food adventurers. A must-try for Pacific Island food.

Right on Station Road, steps from the platform — "feels like home if you're from Fiji." The duck curry is "the best in Auckland," served with dhal, rice and roti. Goat curry is a must when available. Use your hands for the full Fijian experience. The woman at the front is warm and hospitable, refilling dhal and checking on customers. $15 for any curry with rice. Weekdays only, closes 5pm.
