Te Mahia is a quiet residential station serving the communities of Manurewa East, Manurewa South, Randwick Park and Waiata Shores — a newer waterfront neighbourhood alongside the Papakura Stream estuary. The station is a useful starting point for two excellent walking and cycling routes: the Waiata Shores Esplanade Path, which follows Papakura Stream south to the sea, and the Southern Path, a dedicated shared path running from Great South Road through to Karaka.

Walking & Cycling

Two peaceful shared paths start from near the station — one following the stream to the sea, one heading south through rural countryside towards Karaka.

Waiata Shores Esplanade Path

★★★★★4.7(7 reviews)

A beautiful esplanade path following the Papakura Stream from Great South Road south to the sea — wide, well-formed and suitable for walking, jogging, cycling, kids on scooters and dog walking. The path passes through native plantings with freshly planted trees, native bush flowers and the sound of birdsong and running water. "Great walking wide path — open views over the Papakura Stream esplanade. You can only hear birds, trees and stream water sounds." Never floods, even after heavy rain. A peaceful retreat from the surrounding suburb. Free, open 24 hours.

At the end of the 5km path, the route can be extended with rides around Karaka village and the waterfront communities of Karaka Lakes, making it a rewarding half-day outing by train.
